thoughts & ponderings
For some years now eastern traditions have been introduced and integrated into western society. Some things, more mainstream such as music and cuisine and others not so much, but nonetheless a fusion between east and west is undeniable. The idea of chakras and auras may be considered by some as a 'new age' phenomenon but the study and understanding of the chakras goes back thousands of years where they were described in the Hindu Vedas.
The energetic body is possibly one of the lesser known concepts to many people although it is a most fascinating area for me. So, I decided to share a little information today on the chakras. Now, to be clear the chakras are by no means the be all and end all of the subtle body but I feel that it is a good place to start.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means 'wheel'. When applied to the chakras it commonly refers to the spinning energy vortices that are aligned up the spine. While this is a commonly held definition, I believe it to be a western interpretation. On further exploration it seems the more original concept is that they are centres of consciousness in the body. Although these centres are not visible to the human eye, there are some practitioners who are able to see them but this is not so common. Our energetic or subtle body extends far beyond our physical body and the chakras have been described as funnel shaped protrusions that extend from the front and back of the physical body. The exceptions are the base and crown chakras which extend downward in the case of the base chakra and up from the top of the head for the crown chakra.
There are many chakras in the human body but we generally work on the seven main chakras which are as follows:
Base or Root Chakra - situated at the base of the spine or tailbone.
Sacral Chakra - situated in the lower abdomen about 5 - 6 centimeters below the navel.
Solar Plexus Chakra - situated in the upper abdomen in the stomach area.
Heart Chakra - situated in the center or the chest.
Throat Chakra - situated the the base of the neck.
Third Eye or Brow Chakra - situated between the physical eyes.
Crown Chakra - situated at the top of the head.
How does your chakra health affect your physical, emotional and mental state?
Chakras spin and with this motion they draw in vibrations or environmental information that comes within their field. This can range from colour vibrations, to sounds or other peoples energy. This can be a positive experience when the chakra is receiving resonating vibrations that support it, say for instance, the heart chakra resonates with the vibration of the colors pink and green. So to support the heart chakra we may wear green clothing or a crystal or rose quartz or green aventurine. Of course it is much more complex than this but this is just a very basic example. Our chakras are also radiating energy which is picked up by people around us. I go through a simple but powerful exercise with all clients who come to see me for a chakra balance session which is to release energy that is not theirs and recall their own energy back to them like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This is recommended daily as well as having a chakra balance every two to three months.
When our chakras are balanced, the energy flows well through our body and this in turn enhances our physical, emotional and psychological health.
On a physiological level each chakra is corresponds to the physical site of organs or the glands in the endocrine system. Different body parts are represented by a specific chakra and any problems with this body part can be treated through the corresponding chakra. For instance your base chakra relates to the reproductory glands, feet, legs, hips and spine while the third eye chakra relates to pituitary gland, eyes, brain and skull and nervous system.
Psychologically, the lower three chakras relate to our biological instincts such as sexual desire and hunger and our base emotions, for example anger, passion, happiness. The four higher chakras relate to our higher states. For example the heart chakra is a seat of empathy and unconditional love, our throat chakra is higher communication and creativity. The third eye chakra allows us to discriminate, to connect with intuition and understand. Our crown chakra is also related to higher comprehension, a gateway to wisdom and spirituality.
So this is just a small snippet of the vast amount of information out there regarding our chakras. I would love to share more information such as how we can help regulate the chakras with sound, color and food but that is for another day.
