The Triple Diamond System: understanding the Japanese energy model in reiki practice.

In the world of Reiki, many practitioners are taught about chakras, the seven energy centres traditionally associated with Indian spiritual systems. While this model has become deeply embedded in Western reiki practice, the original Japanese approach to energy work used a different framework: the triple diamond system of heaven ki, heart ki, and earth ki. This Japanese energy concept offers profound insights that can deepen our reiki practice and connect us more authentically to the tradition's origins.
Before exploring the triple diamond system, it's essential to understand that Japanese energy concepts developed independently from Indian systems, despite some later cross-cultural influences. While chakras gained prominence in Western reiki through various lineages, Mikao Usui's original teachings were rooted in Japanese Shinto, Buddhist, and indigenous energy concepts that had evolved over millennia in Japan.
The Japanese approach to energy work tends to be more fluid and experiential compared to the more structured chakra system. Rather than focusing on seven specific points along the spine, Japanese energy practice recognises a dynamic interplay between different types of ki (energy) and how they manifest in the body and environment.
In Japanese understanding, ki is the fundamental life force that flows through all existence. However, unlike the often linear perspective of energy moving up and down through chakras, the Japanese view ki as multidirectional, responsive, and interconnected with our environment and cosmic forces.
This perspective aligns perfectly with the essence of reiki practice, where energy naturally flows to where it's needed rather than being directed through specific channels. The Japanese approach recognises that ki exists in various qualities and intensities, each serving different functions in our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
The triple diamond system represents three primary concentrations of ki in the human energy field, each connected to different aspects of our existence:
Heaven Ki (Ten no Ki)
Heaven ki represents the spiritual, cosmic energy that connects us to the universe and higher consciousness. This energy enters through the crown of the head and flows downward, bringing:
- Spiritual inspiration and wisdom
- Connection to universal consciousness
- Clarity of purpose and direction
- Transcendent experiences and insights
- Divine guidance and synchronicity
In reiki practice, when we invoke universal energy through intention and presence, we're primarily working with heaven ki. This energy helps us maintain connection to the source of Reiki and prevents our practice from becoming merely mechanical.
Heart Ki (Kokoro no Ki)
Heart ki is the emotional and mental energy centred in the chest area, but extending throughout the torso. This energy governs:
- Emotional balance and processing
- Compassion and loving-kindness
- Mental clarity and emotional intelligence
- Interpersonal connections and empathy
- The integration of spiritual insights into daily life
For reiki practitioners, heart ki is crucial because it represents the bridge between spiritual energy (heaven ki) and physical manifestation (earth ki). The quality of our heart ki directly influences how effectively we can channel Reiki energy to others.
Earth Ki (Chi no Ki)
Earth ki represents our physical vitality and our connection to the material world. This energy rises from the earth through our feet and lower body, providing:
- Physical strength and endurance
- Grounding and stability
- Practical wisdom and common sense
- Material abundance and manifestation
- Connection to nature and the physical world
In reiki practice, earth ki ensures we remain grounded and present, preventing the spacey or ungrounded feeling that sometimes occurs when working only with higher energies.
The term "diamond" in this system refers to the crystalline pattern formed when these three ki types interact harmoniously. When properly balanced:
- Heaven ki flows down through the crown
- Earth ki rises up through the feet
- Heart ki serves as the central mediating point
- The three energies form a three-dimensional diamond pattern within the body
This diamond pattern creates optimal conditions for reiki energy to flow naturally and effectively, both for self-healing and when treating others.
So let’s compare the Japanese and Indian Systems. While the chakra system provides a useful map of energy centres, the triple diamond system offers several distinct advantages for our reiki practice:
Dynamic vs. Static
Chakras are often viewed as specific points that need to be opened or balanced. The triple diamond system views energy as naturally flowing and changing, requiring less manipulation and more harmonious cooperation.
Simplicity vs. Complexity
Working with three primary energy types can be more accessible than managing seven chakras, especially for beginners. This simplicity allows practitioners to focus more on presence and less on technical details.
Cultural Alignment
Since Reiki originated in Japan, using the Japanese energy system creates a more authentic connection to the practice's roots. This alignment can deepen one's understanding and effectiveness as a practitioner.
Environmental Integration
The triple diamond system explicitly includes our connection to both earthly and cosmic forces, emphasising the relational aspect of energy work that's central to Japanese spirituality.
Here are some practical applications we can introduce to our reiki practice.
For Self-Treatment (Jiko Chiryo)
1. Morning Practice: Begin by feeling earth ki rising through your feet, then invite heaven ki through your crown. Let these energies meet and harmonise in your heart centre before placing hands on your body.
2. During Treatment: Maintain awareness of all three ki types. If feeling ungrounded, emphasise earth ki connection. If lacking inspiration, invite more heaven ki. If experiencing emotional turbulence, focus on balancing heart ki.
3. Hand Positions: Rather than treating specific chakras, place hands where you feel guided, knowing that the triple diamond energy naturally flows to where healing is needed.
If you’re interested to try some meditation practices for triple diamond awareness you could try these;
Standing Diamond Meditation
Stand comfortably with feet hip-width apart. Feel earth ki rising through your feet and legs. Simultaneously invite heaven ki through your crown. Allow these energies to meet at your heart centre, forming a diamond pattern. Maintain this awareness for 10-15 minutes daily.
Walking Meditation
Practice mindful walking while maintaining awareness of earth ki entering through your feet with each step, heaven ki flowing through your crown, and heart ki maintaining balance between the two. I find it’s really lovely to do this in a natural setting.
Breath Work
Breathe in heaven ki through your nose, feeling it descend to your heart. Exhale, sending energy down through your body and into the earth. On the next inhale, draw earth ki up to your heart. Continue this circular breathing pattern.
If you do decide to try these meditations I’d love to hear about your experience!
The beauty of the triple diamond system lies in its applicability beyond formal practice so it’s something we can integrate into our daily life if we choose to:
In our work life
- Maintain earth ki for practical tasks
- Invite heaven ki for creative inspiration
- Balance with heart ki for emotional intelligence
In our relationships
- Use heart ki to enhance empathy
- Ground with earth ki during conflicts
- Seek heaven ki for wisdom in difficult situations
In our spiritual practice
- Apply to any meditation tradition
- Enhance prayer and contemplative practices
- Deepen connection with nature
Overall, the triple diamond system offers reiki practitioners a profound way to connect with the energetic wisdom of their practice's homeland. While the chakra system has its merits, exploring the Japanese energy framework can bring fresh insights and deeper authenticity to our work.
By understanding and working with heaven ki, heart ki, and earth ki, we align ourselves more closely with the original vision of Mikao Usui and the spiritual traditions that influenced him. This alignment can lead to more effortless and effective reiki sessions, greater personal harmony, and a deeper sense of connection with the universal life force.
As we continue our journey as reiki practitioners, embracing the triple diamond system doesn't mean abandoning other energy frameworks, but rather expanding our perception and deepening our practice. In doing so, we honour both the roots of our practice and its potential for continued evolution.
The invitation is simple: experience the diamond pattern within yourself, feel the interplay of heaven, heart, and earth ki, and discover how this ancient Japanese wisdom can illuminate your path as a reiki practitioner. In this discovery, we may find that the most profound healing comes not from complex techniques or extensive knowledge, but from the simple, authentic connection with the fundamental energies that flow through all of life.
